"The Pale takes time from those that have little to spare."

A once thriving colony - stranded on a desert world known as The Pale - faces ruin as it is pulled closer to its star. Life, however, continues regardless, and therein the disintegration of every social fabric, a Rations Officer attempts to come to terms with his role in life - to decide who gets something from the dwindling water reserve, and who doesn't.
